IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT
My 25 Favorite Films by release date, earliest to latest…..IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT (1934)-Frank Capra…. Having viewed over 5,000 films that I have cataloged, on this site, Letterboxd, the twenty five films that I would consider my top echelon favorites begin with this one from the great Frank Capra. Capra shows his versatility in this great romantic comedy. Gable was never better and Colbert was perfect too. Best comedy of the 1930’s. The emotional play between Gable and Colbert takes second seat to the romcom comedy that Capra relies on. Yet, in the end, the two recognize the love that developed between the two and many films, even today, use the comedy formula to get to the final romantic end. The runaway bride finally getting to the drive-in motel for the removal of the room divider. Strong stuff for the middle 1930s and this film is as good as any that have followed in the past 90 years.
