My 25 Favorite Films by release date, earliest to latest…. Captain’s Courageous 1937 directed by Victor Fleming…. Having viewed over 5,000 films that I have cataloged, on this site, Letterboxd, the twenty five films that I would consider my top echelon favorites, my second movie is an all-time great with a stellar cast.
One of the best films of 1937 staring Spencer Tracy with great support from a fine cast including Lionel Barrymore, Freddie Bartholomew, and Melvin Douglas. The father, son relationship between Douglas and Bartholomew is touching yet quite sad as of why fathers sometime do not understand their importance in having a meaningful relationship with their sons. With another father figure taking his place in the fisherman Tracy, Bartholomew grows up from a boy to a young man dealing with someone that actually cares and takes time to teach the values of a true human bonding. A very emotional film and Tracy’s take of a Portuguese fisherman is spot on. .Children are so missing out on having caring men to ground them in the morals of humanity, as demonstrated by Tracy, and Barrymore’s ship captain played by Barrymore. When the ships captain hits the young boy for being a little turd, which he deserved, we are shocked, Yet in today’s society, such actions are not tolerated. To bad they are not. Highly recommended…..have the DVD…
