Texas Runs Over OU; Strong’s Horns Beat OU with line play on both sides of the ball

I didn’t see it coming (UT’s win over OU, I had OU in a rout).  But after thinking about today’s game in the Cotton Bowl, I can look back and say what I watched was not surprising.  Texas, a 1-4 football team, was markedly better on this day, dominating in both lines, offense and defense, with an added component that the coaching staff in Austin did the better job in preparing for this classic confrontation.  Texas wins 24-17 and I feel good for Charlie Strong.  It was needed as much as any game he will coach in his career.  For at least one Saturday in 2015, Hook’em.

Texas rushed 313 yards in their one dimensional offense.  OU’s defense did what they could, stopping UT on various possessions, but that was expected from an undefeated Sooner team.  But when it was needed the Horns got the plays that were enough to frost OU.   Sooner Baker Mayfield’s (QB) play was as good as possible running from for his life (sacked 6 times) but UT’s freshman quarterback Jerrod Heard’s mistake free play and general gamesmanship were what Texas needed. No turnovers, no egregious mistakes this day.   D’Onta Foreman’s 81 yard run in the 3rd was a backbreaker as Texas held their14-3 lead and never allowed OU to catch up. In the final analysis, OU wasn’t as good as many thought and Texas is better than many thought, and line play is a difference on many occasion.
