Win or drop out and get back to education of the student athlete….times are changing…..
The love and excitement to play for your most cherished college team has gone the way of the whatever you want to put in the saying. Professionalism in big time college athletics has changed the major sports into another minor league of the big leagues, especially the NFL and NBA. The hundreds of athletes that now command or desire some big dollars, or on a smaller scale, a lessor amount of cash and endorsement monies are not loyal to the schools they play for, and desire the dollars and go to the portal if they are not satisfied. This model now rules the roost of the college game in football and basketball, and on a smaller scale for certain top level athletes, in softball especially and women’s basketball.
High school elites in football and basketball think mostly of how much they can make and not about the traditions of the schools they will play for. That is not good for the sport, but it is not going to matter much longer. In the finality of the sports, look for a completely reorganization as the crumble the foundation of the football fields and basketball courts of the major universities choke the sport into a different kind of competition.
College sports will suffer as the big money of the donors, corporations, and foundations become disillusioned by the lack of success that comes from their contributions as of the losing schools. Schools that lose will not continue to dish out the money to see their teams get beat. Fans will not attend games that they know that their team is a total second tier flop, year in and year out. Look at the state of the game today. Only a handful of fans attend many games currently in basketball, with football now showing the signs of a lack of interest.
A super league could be the next coming, but one that might change memberships when the bottom feeders of the league fails to produce. Losing cannot keep the gates open as fans will not attend, telling the schools it is not worth the effort to see us lose.
The schools that don’t participate can get back to business and offer their athletes what they deserve, a chance to get an education and a future outside of sports. The dropout rate for the top layer will shrink, and the true student athlete can get back to playing for the excitement and love of “their” school.
