Tulsa’s Jordan Mitchell attempts to tackle Oklahoma’s Daniel Brooks during the NCAA football game between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman, Okla. on Saturday, September 19, 2015. IAN MAULE/Tulsa World
Some in this world thought Tulsa would hang with Oklahoma today. They did. But OU’s offense still had their way in a 52-38 win against the Golden Hurricane on Owen Field today in front of the 100th straight sellout crowd. 84,000 viewed the offensive show as OU amassed 701 total yards in the game. Ever improving Sooner quarterback Baker Mayfield went 32 for 38 with 487 yards and 4 passing scores. Samaji Perine ran for 122 yards for OU. Mayfield went one score from braking the Sooner record for number of touchdown’s produced in a game which is 6. Mayfield got 6 with two rush and 4 touchdowns passes. OU used he run game of Perine in the fourth quarter to burn clock, which was successful.
The Sooners jumped out to a 24-3 lead in the 2nd quarter and were driving when red-shirt freshman Joe Mixon fumbled and Tulsa took advantage and drove the ball for their first touchdown. Samaje Perine fumbled away another drive and TU again took advantage and drove for another score to make it 31-17. Recovering an on-sides kick on the subsequent kick-off, TU quarterback Dane Evans (34-51-427-4td) hit Keyarris Garrett (14-189-1td) on a hail Mary from 43 yards with 8 seconds on the clock, taking OU to the half with a 31-24 score.
Mayfield also rushed for 85 yards and two scores, one a 39 yard up the middle scamper in the first quarter. The junior transfer from Texas Tech totaled 572-yards, which bested the school record set by Landry Jones against West Virginia in 2012. His passing yardage total was fourth highest in school history.
”Man, he was lighting it up, extending plays,” Sooner receiver Sterling Shepard said after today’s game. ”You just kind of have to run with him. He’ll find you down the field. He’s always looking to pass first, but if he has to take it on the ground, he will do it, and you guys got to see a little bit of that today, too.
“It’s pretty humbling, especially knowing who has come through here,” Mayfield said. “It’s pretty special to me. But we had so much more on the table. Who knows what we could have done if we had just executed the offense better.”
