Oklahoma State sports fans will always support the basketball team….well for the two years before Underwood they did not. Did I miss those thousands of empty seats in GIA? Who is trying to fool who? As for Holder and OSU, they want a big time coach but cannot pay for one….as for Underwood, he wants what everybody other coach wants, to be paid what you are worth…..Is that hard to understand?

Now with a new coach announced today, will the Poke fans support the program? From many comments in social media, the word might be no.

Today the Pokes, through the hiring process of Athletic Director Mike Holder, choose Mike Boynton, an assistant under Brad Underwood last year at Stillwater.  The likes and dislikes of this move fall mostly on the negative side, as the Cowboys will get Coach Boynton on the cheap.  Maybe this move by Mike Holder will be good.  Possibly not.  Fact is, nobody knows. But give the new man a chance and let us see where the program goes the next few years.  New blood in the head coaching profession at the highest level of college basketball is not always bad.

From OSU Sports Extra:

  • Boynton, a member of Underwood’s staff at OSU and Stephen F. Austin, was one of five people who interviewed for the job on Thursday.
  • He becomes the 20th head coach in Cowboy history and will be tasked with continuing the momentum started by Underwood in a 20-win campaign this past season.
  • A Brooklyn native, Boynton played college basketball at South Carolina from 2000-04. His first staff position came as a graduate manager at Furman in 2004-05.
  • From there, Boynton spent two seasons as an assistant at Coastal Carolina (2005-07), one as an associate head coach at Wofford (2007-08) and five as an assistant coach at South Carolina (2008-13), his alma mater. He then moved with Underwood from South Carolina to Stephen F. Austin when Underwood got his first head-coaching gig.  (http://www.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra/osusportsextra/osu-basketball-assistant-mike-boynton-named-next-cowboys-head-coach/article_0bb401fe-525b-5d01-975a-c6e68ac24054.html)
