Christopher Nolan’s first film is better than just OK……..”Following” is my take….

Christopher Nolan’s first film is better than just good. After putting an investiment in buying this film, and veiwing it, I found it to be an engaging and fresh film in Nolan’s film making venture for one of my favorite directors.

My Letterboxed short review: Right from the get-go, you get a Nolan signature. The soundtrack is already making a presence, and you know that your listening skills will be put to the test, at least with the music. The interview with “the man in the suit” and the intercutting film of his actions get you hooked immediately as you wonder about doing this, “following”, someone, and how it might play out. That put me, the viewer, into a very problematic state of mind. Do I get off wanting to “follow” someone, or is it just an exhilaration of some dark thoughts of doing something that might not be all that approving by society? That arousal of my deep psyche was not unwelcome as Nolan got me bought in, as I just said.

Good for Nolan and thanks to him, I will not be viewing a first-time film by a future great behind the camera, but a notable work that will hold the test of time.

The emphasis of not following the same person twice, the rule that should not be broken, is the overriding setup, as the “follower” meets and gets into the messy business of robbery with the thief Cobb.

As Nolan moves his non-linear set pieces along, the screenplay is outstanding as you feel like you are in the action of the film, listening to Cobb and the “follower” discuss as the crimes take place.

We have two very fine actors in Jeremy Theobald (the follower) and Alex Haw (Cobb). Too bad that Haw has not pursued a career in acting, as he has a presence in this film.

As for the rest of the movie, it works, and to go any further would give it away. Top-notch entertainment. Have the Blu-ray copy four and a half stars out of five stars.

Experience this film and I think you will  ber engrossed in it.
