One way to look at 2023 for the Oklahoma Sooners is that the season ended with a 10-3 record having one of the weakest schedules in recent history. To point out the positive, 2023’s ten win season, coming off a losing year in 2022, at 6-7, the Sooners know that winning puts the program in a much better light than the alternative of 2023’s final record.
The Sooners will transition over to the Southeastern Conference come September. Another 10 win season in 2024 would be nice and Sooner Nation would not be so hesitant to take head coach Brent Venable’s 2nd three loss year in a bad way. As the team goes from the easiest schedule to the most difficult in their history, OU’s move could be seen as a road filled with “L’s” after the first non-conference games come Fall. Or the wins could be chalked up with significant wins over teams like Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, Auburn, Texas, Mississippi, and Missouri. Right now, the former schedules where the Sooners often were favorites in every game they played in a year, is history. A season that could end 6-6 would not be out of the question, but with a some breaks and huge improvement in player development and coaching, OU could be on the brink of a historic winning 2023.
It will be determined if the move to the SEC will be positive in the next couple of seasons for OU. For sure, the money that the change will bring is assured. Now will the win/loss record be worth it? I would say yes, without hesitation. Will Coach Venables still be the head man, say in five years? That is a much more difficult question to answer. Losing is not tolerated in Norman, ever.
