College football\u2019s 150th anniversary in 2019 and I honor a great of the past. Today, Red Grange,\u00a0 All-American from Illinois.<\/span><\/h6>\n

Harold Edward \u201cRed\u201d Grange (June 13, 1903 \u2013 January 28, 1991) was a professional and college American football player. He is a charter member of both the College Football Hall of Fame (1951) and Pro Football Hall of Fame (1963). In College he was known as the Wheaton Ice Man and in the pros he was known as the Galloping Ghost.<\/span>
\nGrange was a three-time all-American in college with 31 touchdowns and 3,362 yards in only 20 games. Less than a week after he completed his college eligibility in 1925, at a time when pro football was unpopular, he signed with the Chicago Bears under George Halas. Making over $100,0000 his first year he became football\u2019s first superstar and a national hero. His popularity as a professional gave the pro game its launch into legitimacy.http:\/\/www.newworldencyclopedia.org\/entry\/Red_Grange<\/span><\/h6>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Halloween is a couple of months away, but Illinois will be looking like ghosts this weekend when the Illini take on Minnesota in Big Ten action. To be more specific, Illinois will look like Galloping Ghosts in honor of an Illini legend who also happens to be one of the most significant figures in the sport\u2019s history.<\/span>
\nIllinois will wear what it is calling a \u201cGray Ghost\u201d alternate uniform for its homecoming game against Minnesota on October 25. The uniform is a tribute to one of the great players in the history of the program, Harold \u201cRed\u201d Grange.<\/span>
\nGrange was nicknamed The Galloping Ghost and was a charter member of both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In 1924, Grange was named the Chicago Tribune Silver Football award winner, honoring him as the best player in the Big Ten. Grange became a national star on October 18, 1924, when he returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown against a heavily favored Michigan team that was aiming for a national championship. He soon rushed for three more touchdowns from distances of 67, 56 and 44 yards in the first quarter, and another from 56 yards later in the game. As if that was not enough, Grange later added a touchdown pass to the box score as Illinois smashed the Wolverines, 39-14. The game also served as the grand opening for Memorial Stadium at Illinois.<\/span>
\nAfter the game, legendary sportswriter Grantland Rice authored the following iconic reflection on Grange\u2019s performance:<\/span>
