Just finished a very strong sports novel based on women’s college basketball, the depression of the 1930’s, and the accomplishments of a man driven to take sport beyond just the bouncing of a ball on a court of opportunity.\u00a0 “Dust Bowl Girls” is a first\u00a0novel for Lydia Reeder.\u00a0She is the grandniece of the\u00a0major character in\u00a0the book, \u00a0Sam Babb, the extraordinary basketball coach\u00a0of a small college of the day, Oklahoma\u00a0Presbyterian College of Durant.<\/p>\n

OPC was a\u00a0small college basketball team was\u00a0made up of locally recruited women in it’s hay day, \u00a0the early 1930’s. \u00a0Reeder is able to show the determination and the want to work as a team of these young women and how they overcame\u00a0age and\u00a0lack of experience\u00a0to\u00a0qualified for the Women’s National tournament, sponsored by the AAU.\u00a0 The National’s\u00a0were made up of\u00a0many professional teams that\u00a0featured the best\u00a0females\u00a0in not only the USA but the world.\u00a0 That list of great ball players included the greatest woman athlete in the world at that time, Babe Didrikson, who would win gold in the Olympic in track and field just a year or so later.\u00a0 OPC beat\u00a0“the\u00a0Babe’s” team on their road to the championship.\u00a0 The two consecutive women’s\u00a0AAU titles were part of the OPC Cardinals 89 game winning streak from March 1931 to March 1934.\u00a0 The road to the women’s basketball trophy came through Durant and the fields of the depression of the day.<\/p>\n

Enough for the details but take my word this is a great read and when the movie producers get the agreement signed with the author and publisher, we will have another “Hoosiers” for sports fans to view on the big screen.<\/p>\n

You will hear about this story in the near future that is for sure.<\/p>\n
