\nBeaty\u2019s base is Texas\u00a0High School and\u00a0as he\u00a0will try to get players from that high school scene.\u00a0 Having coached with Mark Mangenio during the Jayhawks last glory season\u00a0Beaty has spent three years as an assistant in Lawrence and knows what it will take to bring a representative team\u00a0to\u00a0Kansas.\u00a0\u00a0 He hired Clint\u00a0Bowen, who\u00a0has been at KU for most of his coaching career and was the take-over coach for fired Charlie Weis last year, going 1-7 in the final 8 games.\u00a0 Bowen knows KU and is an outstanding defensive coach that should be a positive for the program. Both HC Beaty and DC Bowen\u00a0know\u00a0 what it takes to bring a winner to the school. Yet,\u00a0 as both also know,\u00a0 winning football games, especially conference games, won\u2019t be easy.\u00a0 One conference win such as last year produced is not cutting the mustard off the Hawks beak.\u00a0Beaty could find himself in a no-win situation if improvement and money are not directed toward the program.\u00a0 With a solid fan base of 35,000, Memorial Stadium (50,071), the\u00a0oldest\u00a0home stadium\/field in the conference.\u00a0 And\u00a0those facilities\u00a0won\u2019t draw much enthusiasm from non-hardcore KU recruits.\u00a0 Beaty, again, banks on Texas as\u00a0\u201chis\u201d fertile\u201d recruiting ground, and it is a must for him to get\u00a0some quality players out of the Lone Star\u00a0state.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\nFrom<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Athlon\u2019s, the KU situation is spelled out: \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Last season, the Jayhawks ranked 63rd\u00a0in the nation in attendance with 37,884 per game at Memorial Stadium. Also, KU is second on the food chain in a state that doesn\u2019t produce many high-level recruits.\u00a0Kansas is one of the toughest AQ conference jobs in the nation when you factor in the recruiting base, lukewarm support and the fact that no coach since the 1950s has enjoyed sustained success in Lawrence<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
With a basement attitude\u00a0in football, Kansas is destined to live in the bowels of the cellar of the Big 12 football conference. I am sure that many Jayhawk fans\u00a0can\u00a0\u201clike\u201d a\u00a0winner and do\u00a0care about the program but being \u201cthe\u201d weak link, \u201cthe whipping boy\u201d of the conference is not a pleasurable place to be.\u00a0Fact of the\u00a0matter, KU is a basketball school more than any place in America. \u00a0To be an negative Nancy with this program is hard not to do. It is what it is.\u00a0 To be blunt, KU\u2019s football program stinks.\u00a0\u00a0Beaty knows this deep down under and his challenge is not one to build a solid resume as a head coach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
