WHAT IS A COWARD?\u00a0<\/strong> <\/em><\/h2>\n
James Garner and Julie Andrews, the stars of the\u00a0The Americanization of Emil,<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0a 1964 American comedy-drama<\/a> war film<\/a> written by Paddy Chayefsky<\/a> and directed by Arthur Hiller<\/a>,\u00a0have said that this movie was there personal favorite. \u00a0I can say as much, as it is my personal favorite movie of James Garner, and my second favorite movie of Julie Andrews (Sound of Music is my personal favorite). \u00a0I first viewed this gem as a young teenager, just as the Viet Nam war was taking off. \u00a0It bothered me at the time, a movie about a confessed coward (James Garner<\/a> as Lt. Cmdr. Charles E. “Charlie” Madison) during World War 2.<\/h5>\n

Even though I don’t consider this movie anti-war (some critics do), it’s sure not a poster boy film for war in general. \u00a0A comedy yes, but as written in book form by author\u00a0William Bradford, it was neither a comedy or a novel about cowardice. \u00a0The great Paddy Chayefsky wrote the screenplay and changed the book into a thought provoking movie. \u00a0 [ “Paddy\u00a0Chayefsky’s adaptation, while retaining the title, characters, situation, background and many specific plot incidents, nevertheless told a very different story. “I found the book, which is serious in tone, essentially a funny satire, and that’s how I’m treating it.” Wikipedia]\u00a0 After reading the book, I agree.

The subject of cowardice in this film was troubling. As we all want to say, \u00a0that men and women who give their time, effort, and many times, their lives to defend our country, are heroic.\u00a0 But are they actually true heroes?\u00a0 Is it all about getting killed? \u00a0This movie makes one think about this serious topic in a troubling way. \u00a0How would you like to be a dead hero?\u00a0 And what if there is nothing beyond this existence here on earth?\u00a0 You gave up everything for what?\u00a0 Pass into the land of the wonderment of nothingness?\u00a0 This movie is one of the best as it is for a thinking human being, and most importantly, one that ponders what your actions on earth really mean in the big picture. \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n
It gives a platform for\u00a0 James Garner to show how much a gifted actor he was and for\u00a0 Julie Andrews to tell the world she was more than Mary Poppins. \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n

The Americanization of Emily is a 1964 British-American black-and-white<\/a> romantic<\/a> black comedy<\/a> war film<\/a> written by Paddy Chayefsky<\/a>, produced by Martin Ransohoff<\/a>, directed by Arthur Hiller<\/a> and starring James Garner<\/a>, Julie Andrews<\/a>, Melvyn Douglas<\/a> and James Coburn<\/a>. The film also features Joyce Grenfell<\/a>, Keenan Wynn<\/a> and William Windom<\/a>. Chayefsky’s screenplay was loosely adapted from the 1959 novel of the same name by William Bradford Huie<\/a>, who had been a Seabee<\/a> officer during the Normandy Invasion<\/a>. The film is set in London during World War II in the weeks leading up to D-Day<\/a> in 1944.<\/em><\/strong>[4]<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/sup><\/h5>\n<\/blockquote>\n
