Another blow to the University of Oklahoma as they continue to play the second fiddle to the University of Texas in the Big Twelve Conference.  Baker Mayfield was denied another year of eligibility to play for the Sooners as a coalition of the Texas Longhorns and four other Big Twelve schools voted against the extra year.  A five to five vote sends Baker Mayfield to another non-conference school in 2017 or to professional football, either the NFL or the CFL.  The walk-on change didn’t happen as he has only one year to play in the Big Twelve as of conference rules.

This vote today was just as much a vote against the Sooners and the four other schools that voted with OU than the player himself.  This was a vote against the long term health of the conference.  If Bob Bowlsy, commissioner of the league could draw up a better plan during the conference meetings this week to sink the league, he could not have done a better job.  A lack of leadership by this man in adding teams to the inferior Power Five league, and a lack of getting the league to play a football championship with a true twelve team league will be the ruination of this group of ten schools.

The question of how long will OU President David Boren continue to eat Longhorn crow. Boren, the most powerful man on the Oklahoma University campus, will do one of two things in the coming months.  Either he sells the Board of Regents of the University that the Sooners must move out of the Big Twelve to another conference (and they are wanted by three Power Fives currently without reservations-SEC, PAC, B10); or he resigns his position.  Boren, more than any man alive, knows what is best for the University, and if he thinks his recommendations  are not going to be acted on, he will quit.  David Boren is one proud Sooner and a man that has to be trusted.  The Board of Regents oversee the University, the President runs it and makes the moves needed for it’s viability.

On another note, in the five to five vote that denied Mayfield another Big Twelve year, if Oklahoma State voted with Texas, look for payback from Boren and the Sooners if they make the move out.  They will not stop OSU from going with them to another conference, but don’t look for any favors or positive actions in bring the Cowboys with them.  This deal today with Mayfield has repercussions and don’t think what happen doesn’t matter.  The Big Twelve is making decisions that border on a complete disassociation between Oklahoma and Texas and Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.  How OSU voted today probably will not be put out to the press, but the men in the room know who voted for and against.  OSU Nation, be worried that your school voted with OU and not Texas.  The lifeline is at stake for the  Pokes and Sooners.  Bad blood can happen with one transfusion.

  1. Baker Mayfield got his extra year today as the Big 12 voted again, this time in favor of a rule change that give the OU star two years to play.
